From humble beginnings, Fiume has grown to become one of the busiest restaurants in Wolverhampton and has recently won “Best Italian Restaurant in England”. Our wonderful Agent Tish popped by to meet the team to find out more…
We love: Seriously? It’s Italian food…We love it all…
Where: Right next to the canal near Tettenhall, Wolverhampton.
Who: Carla and Stefano, the husband and wife dream team behind Fiume.
How did Fiume come to creation? Tell us more…
Fiume was started in 2013 by myself and my husband Stefano and is located in the heart of Compton, directly adjacent to the canal. We both wished to build a place where customers could come not only to enjoy the beautiful dishes bought over from Italy, but also create an environment where everyone could feel a real sense of Italian hospitality, warmth and welcome. From humble beginnings, Fiume has grown to become one of the busiest restaurants in Wolverhampton. It was certainly a struggle and our journey was rather difficult at times. We were young and inexperienced about how to “run a restaurant under the managerial business perspective”. The pressure was high and it was a challenge to build a portfolio of faithful returning customers and committed staff that had the drive to help us build Fiume into what it is today!
Most popular dish served on a Saturday night…
We have many popular dishes but the most loved is definitely our sharers that we serve both as starters and as mains and are full of different flavours. Also our desserts and coffee are enormously popular, the most infamous being our “BiscoffMisu” – It’s a real sin!
Where do you get your inspiration for your dishes from?
Our dishes not only represent modern interpretations inspired by our home regions of Sardinia and Basilicata, but also the dedication and passion we put into every single dish that comes out of the kitchen. Our inspiration for our creations comes from the fresh products that we get daily from our local suppliers. We use local green grocers and local butchers, all based in Tettenhall Green.
You recently won Best Italian Restaurant in England. Congratulations!
Yes, we recently won the Best Italian Establishment Award, not only for the Midlands but the whole of England. Winning this award means the world to us. It represents all of the hard work, dedication and drive that has made Fiume into the restaurant it is now and it is a reason for great joy and pride, not only for us as a business but for our families back in Italy too. It’s a recognition that soothes the bitterness of having us away from home.
Favourite spot to hang out with the family around Tettenhall/Compton?
Before we opened Fiume, our favourite place to eat was definitely Bella in Chapel Ash, which was the only real Italian restaurant and also owned by our cousins. Nowadays, when we have free time, we like to take our little girls Taia and Nora for a walk around Tettenhall Green and pop into Cataldo’s Italian for an espresso standing at the bar (in typical Italian fashion!). When we treat ourselves for a romantic night out, we head to Birmingham for a few cheeky cocktails and usually opt for Sushi.
Tell us more about the team…
We have a magnificent team in the front of house and the kitchen. Our General Managers Adam and Gemma and the Head Chef and Kitchen Manager Steven have all been with us from the very beginning. The five of us together have been through many difficult challenges and with everyone else here now, we are able to give our customers the standards and consistency they expect. We’re an authentic Italian restaurant and take great care with the food and the hospitality we provide.
What’s next…
As for the future of Fiume, we don’t have any plans on changing anything any time soon, other than maybe to refresh the look of the interiors that occasionally needs a revamp!
We love it! Thank you to the wonderful team at Fiume. We can’t wait to book a table…
