Royal colours, luxurious hospitality and a mix of vintage furnishings; what a lovable combo.

If we are going for a couple of nights away in the UK my first port of call is Mr & Mrs Smith… so when we had to go to Deal on the Kent coast to do a photoshoot of a gorgeous barn conversion I was thrilled to discover The Rose on their website. “Book us a room and a table for dinner”, I barked at Mr C (you have to be tough with him sometimes!)

The Rose is spearheading Deal’s revival, bringing bold colours and considered design to a much-loved pocket of the Kent coast. Is what I read. And my gosh, The Rose delivered.

Downstairs, the mod-British restaurant is full of mid-century finds and the bar is hung with art from Kent and beyond. The barman knocked us up a couple of stunning cocktails – mine was a smoked pear something or other.. delicious. I had two. We ate Kent’s finest roast hake and rump steak, drank more cocktails and had a thoroughly wonderful evening.

The rooms were effortlessly stylish, which is what you expect from the owner – the former design editor of Wallpaper* magazine.

Leave the kids at home. Take a huge bag for the shopping you will be forced to endure in the boutiques and vintage shops around Deal.

We love the Great British seaside xx
