Around Allt-Yr-Yn Avenue
Local life
The great outdoors is ubiquitous in Newport’s prestigious Ridgeway area, and goes hand in hand with the quality of life enjoyed here. Nearby Allt-Yr-Yn or ‘Hillside of ash trees’ Nature Reserve is ideal for anything from a leisurely amble to an energetic hike. It’s also perfect for wildlife spotting, with 94 different species of birds alone recorded in the area. And the flight of Fourteen Locks is just a few minutes away as well; an engineering feat of the Industrial Revolution, rising 160 feet in just half a mile, with a café serving tasty breakfast sandwiches to revive you after an early morning walk along the Monmouthshire-Brecon canal towpath.
Well connected
It’s a short walk to the central train station and its links to Cardiff, Bristol, London and beyond, and just a short drive for the M4, with the capital within reach in 2 hours. Prominent architecture, Gaer Fort, Cardiff Bay and the beautiful Severn Estuary provide outstanding views.
There are a number of schools close by, with the highly-regarded Glasllwych Primary School less than a mile away. You’re spoilt for choice when it comes to toddler groups, clubs, social activities and fitness classes, as well as Stow Park Tennis Club for a rally with friends.
Visit beautiful Victorian Belle Vue Park or National Trust’s Tredegar House, at the heart of Newport’s heritage. And be sure to stop off for coffee and homemade cake at The Café at Ridgeway. Gem42 is certainly that – an absolute gem for classy Italian cuisine. And Sunday wouldn’t be Sunday without popping into The Ridgeway award-wining bistro bar for a delicious roast dinner and catch up with Manager, Tom. And, for eclectic homeware, try independent Machen Interiors in Caerleon.
