Marlow
Friendly vibes
Marlow is one of the original down-from-Londoners’ honeypots. Something about its pretty historic streets, and the dreaminess of the Thames hung heavy with weeping willows and boat clubs, has for centuries pulled in those sick of the Smoke – like Percy and Mary Shelley, probably after peace, quiet and a better work-life balance than they could get in the capital, with its streets running with ordure and don’t even talk to me about the cost of barouche-landaus. Legions have followed ever since.
The river is a big draw for legendary Olympians and mere mortals alike. — you may see Sir Steve Redgrave wandering along the banks watching the eager weekend rowers, paddle boarders and boaters. There’s a winning food scene led by Tom Kerridge’s Hand and Flowers, the only UK pub with two Michelin stars, and popular year-round events including the Marlow Regatta and Pub in the Park.
Idyllic & postcard pretty
Marlow is unquestionably well heeled. Smart residents have an array of places to be seen and to see each other. The High Street is buzzing and the schools are sought after. There are sports clubs to join, parks to play in, bookshops to browse around and numerous places to buy champagne. Yes, this is a bustling town, yet you’re also in the heavenly walking territory of the Chiltern Hills where you can dare to get your Le Chameaus muddy.
If you’re concerned about schooling, Marlow has it covered. Sir William Borlase is a grammar school right in the centre of town and is renowned for its excellent education, along with Great Marlow School. The primary schools (Spinfield, Danesfield etc…) all have fantastic reputations along with the fine selection of public schools in the area.
