Local life

Garden Rose Cottage has been beautiful renovated and restored by the architect and interior designer owner. This grade II listed, 16th Century cottage is a secluded home nestled in the heart of the Warwickshire countryside with unspoilt views across farmland. It's a little piece of heaven.

The cottage was redesigned with modern living in mind, there is now a pleasing flow to the home that allows open plan living as well private spaces. We love the way the cottage has retained the ancient whilst capturing the modern. The exposed beams against the Plain English kitchen, the original floorboards complemented by the Farrow & Ball painted walls create character. It's a place you want to call home.

The kitchen is newly installed and boasts induction hob, oak cupboards, fridge freezer and dishwasher. There is an open fire next to the French doors, which look out across the countryside. "We wanted to capture the stunning view. When you are cooking you can gaze out for inspiration." A large pantry provides lots of storage, it is fully shelved. The laundry room houses the washer, dryer and boiler, as well as a large Belfast sink and cupboards.

Walk along the hall and into the sitting room and you fall in love. The large room with stripped back beams and log burning stove is large but cosy. There is space for sofas, chairs, drinks cabinet and more. Through an opening at the end of the room leads to the study, painted in a moody black. There is a desk, shelving and space for seating. When you sit at the desk you look out the one acre garden and the fields beyond.

There is downstairs cloakroom with WC and skink. It has been beautifully decorated in the stunning style of the rest of the cottage.

The gardens are both beautiful and productive. The orchard has a chicken coup amongst it; eggs, plums and apples will keep you fed. The kitchen garden is established and can be managed as your hunger dictates. The owners have grown all kinds of produce. There are two lawns and a ride on mower is included in the rental. At the back of the cottage is a path from the kitchen door to the patio. This is no ordinary patio though. There is a pergola with creeping roses, a pizza oven and views to drink in as you enjoy a glass of wine with friends. There is a timber garage, garden storage and oil tank.

Upstairs there three large bedrooms. Each bedroom is large enough for a double bed and lots of storage. It's the master bedroom that is the wow room of the house and the room where dream are made, literally. The ceillings have been lifted and the beams exposed to create one of the most luxurious spaces we have ever seen. "We were inspired by a boutique hotel in the Cotswolds." The roof lights and three original windows provide light and there is a serene feeling of calm. Perfect for sleeping.

The second bedroom has exposed floorboards, a stone fire place and exposed brick walls. It's full of character and interest. The third bedroom is the same size and looks out across farmland. Both rooms are quiet and peaceful.

The bathroom is as stylish as the rest of the home. Open the stripped back wooden door and you find what you expect; perfection. Original floorboards, high ceilings, exposed beams, freestanding bath, huge walk-in shower, large sink and a cute window with beautiful views. You would struggle to get Mrs Clarke out of here once she is in the bath.

Location

Rowington

A proper village. Two Pubs & Beautiful Countryside

Rowington is a great village tucked away in the beautifulWarwickshire countryside. But it’s certainly not remote. In fact we think it is better connected than most places in England. You could be jetting off to warmer climes from Birmingham airport, which is only 20 minutes away, zipping along to London from Lapworth Station or zooming down the M40 quicker than Mrs Clarke can say supper’s ready.

If it is Birmingham you are wanting to get to, then Lapworth station runs regular services to all Birmingham stations. The local school and nursery are crackers. There is a lovely village hall, tennis courts and miles and miles of lovely walks.

Pull on your wellies and enjoy the countryside.

That’s the boring stuff done! Did I mention the pub? The Tom O The Wood is a Mr Clarke favourite. Charlie, the landlady is charming and Chris, the chef is a genius - his steak and kidney pudding is a thing of beauty. Boris the pub dog will meet you at the door and show you to your table for Pie Night on a Thursday and Fish & Chip Friday.

Everyone is friendly around here. "It is a proper village" said one particularly well dressed local gent at the pub. How very country!

  • Closest village/town: Lapworth, Shrewley & Lowsonford
  • Post Office: 1
  • Stores: DJ at Lapworth store is a top chap
  • Supermarket: Waitrose in Kenilworth or Sainsburys, Warwick
  • Pubs: Tom O' The Wood (Great ale and Pie Night is a must)
  • Walks: Miles and miles of canals and footpaths.
