Finglesham Barn reinterprets the traditional idea of a barn conversion with a sophisticated modern aesthetic akin to an art gallery mixed with a boutique hotel. There are large open living spaces juxtaposed with intimate rooms, which creates an interest at every moment. A large entrance hall is set up as a dining space that makes you want to host a family supper and invite friends in. The vast living room is flooded with natural light and the kitchen is a modern space for a discerning home cook.

The highlight for us is the generously proportioned living space that is predominantly open plan allowing for flexibility. We can imagine children playing at one end of the space whilst adults converse at the other - together but independent. A large kitchen with dramatic double height ceiling feels like a room for mornings. There is light and space, an island to sit at and eat cereal and drink coffee. The snug, off the kitchen, is the most used room of the home and can be set up as an office, reading room or even a guest bedroom should you require it on the many occasions that you will have guests.

As well as style, there is purpose to this property. The large utility area has a cloakroom, storage and room for washing the dogs. The upper floor of the house provides four large bedrooms all with their own character but all with a gentle nod to the original life of the barn. The different heights of the windows, exposed beams and stunning countryside views make the bedrooms calm sleeping spaces. The neutral colouring and soft flooring underfoot provide a quiet and sophisticated aesthetic. This chic, modern interior continues through to the family bathroom with metro tiles and clean sharp lines.

(lucky thing!)

When we arrived for our whistle stop tour of the small but perfectly formed town we were blown away, both physically (the wind was howling) and metaphorically. The people were all so friendly, charasmatic, vibrant and full of the joys of Deal, even in the rain and wind. This place can officially be called cool.

In the narrow Georgian streets of Deal’s old centre, plaques tell the story of the seaside town’s colourful past. Once a busy port and notorious smugglers’ haven, it was home to 365 pubs, one for every day of the week (sound like Mr C’s idea of heaven). Now Deal High Street has won acclaim for the number of its independent boutiques – don’t miss Will & Yates for a spot of antique and homeware shopping or the beautiful Linden Hall Studio for a taste of the homegrown art scene.

If you’re on the hunt for brunch or a light lunch, stop in at local favourite The Pier Cafe – as the name suggests, it’s stated at the end of Deal pier. The vibe is chilled and the food is incredible, the service is with a smile and the viewer are amazing.

You won’t find a local bar that does a better cocktail than the Rose – the stunning pub and boutique hotel owned by the uber stylish former design editor of Wallpaper* magazine and her impressive landlord husband (the great-grandson of the brewers that had once owned the pub – Mrs C enjoyed a Margarita with smoked Pear and Mr C tucked into an Old Fashioned Negroni, both were of the highest cocktail order.

Deal packs a punch and we would love to call it home. It is small, and has everything you could want. The people are lovely and the atmosphere is bubbling with excitement for an exciting future whilst all nodding to the colourful past.

  • Walks: Make the most of the sea air on the walk between Deal and Sandwich (around two hours if you stay close to the coast), once home to the Earl who inspired the eponymous snack.
