Meriden
Local life

The Byre is more than a cowshed. It is a a beautiful barn conversion with a warm heart. We love it.

Mrs Clarke

Standing in the manicured garden of this stunning home you are surrounded by the sweet smell of fresh air, views across rolling countryside, the sound of tweeting birds and the warm sense of home. Perfection.

The Byre is the country idyll. It is a home that Mrs Clarke can see family gatherings, friends over for dinner and drinks, children and dogs playing in the garden and summer days spent pottering amongst the flower beds. Mr Clarke on the other hand has different plans. He has already spoken to a top architect and planned how to extend, renovate and develop the barn and out buildings into a ultra modern country home. Whichever way the next lucky owner of The Byre decides to live, all we know is that they will be very happy.

Meriden is literally in the heart of the country. Tucked along Back Lane sits The Byre. It’s lovely driving the car along the long, winding, tree lined driveway. It’s one of those entrances that slows you down and encourages the shoulders to relax and the stresses and strains of the day are left behind. On the left is a manicured lawn with ancient tress and a peaceful pond. To the right is an orchard, a sweet gate that leads to the paddock at the back of the barn. There is nothing else in sight, no houses blocking your view, no trains, no people, nothing, just uninterrupted rural views across to Meriden and beyond.

Park the car on the gravel driveway and head inside, taking a moment to breath in the quiet and appreciate the cottage garden. Different flowers pop up throughout the year. It is a treat to see snowdrops, then daffodils, then hydrangeas, roses and lavender. The Byre means cowshed, and that is what the home used to be, 25 years ago. The building is U-shaped with a conservatory added. There is an old dairy behind the drive, which is used as a very large workshop/ garage. So large it houses a tractor!

Through the front door and hang your coat up in the stone floored vestibule and head into the heart of the home. The kitchen has the must have accessory for every country house; an Aga. The double window at the front looks out to the lawned courtyard so you can keep an eye on children or an eye out for impromptu guests. The window at the back of the kitchen has a view to die for, rural and green, it is a gorgeous vista for breakfast. Although the actual kitchen is smallish, there is a large utility space, a pantry (another must have for discerning country folk), a large cupboard and storage. To watch the lady of the house make us tea you can see that the kitchen is perfect as it is, but someone else may want to have a little re-shape and open the space up.

The back door, off the kitchen, opens out to more garden. The garden at the back of the barn looks out to the paddock, where stabling could be built for horses (planning may need to be granted). The gardens are all linked so you can walk all the way around the property. You find something new every time you walk around from a rose covered arbour to a log store and a kitchen garden area. The Byre has interest around every corner.

The dining room and sitting room have all the characterful trimmings you want from a barn conversion. Exposed beams, open fire, lots of windows, exposed brick, quirky touches and a warm feel. Mrs Clarke likes that the dining room and sitting room are separate, she likes formality and having different rooms for different purposes. Mr Clarke would get a sledge hammer and knock through the dividing wall and make the two rooms into one open plan space for the whole family. Off the sitting room is a big and bright conservatory. We have had Christmas dinner for twelve in here. It is a multi-purpose room and it lets us enjoy the garden in the bad British weather.

Along the corridor you find two cute bedrooms that boast plenty of room for double beds. There are more beams and every bedroom has ample space for storage, desk space or anything else you may want in a bedroom. There is an airing cupboard for the towels and linen. The bathroom has a shower over the tub and a neat and tidy suite.

The west wing of The Byre was originally stabling and is very exciting indeed. There is bags of potential. Unlike the rest of the home, this end is double height and there are opportunities to extend up and across. There is a large office with a stunning window where a barn door will have once been. The view is once again beautiful. This rooms has been used as a bedroom. Above the study is a loft space currently used for storage. This could easily be transformed into a playroom, study or somewhere to build a train set.

The master bedroom is more like a boutique hotel in the Cotswolds than your average place of sleep. There are high ceilings and lots of space. The bathroom next-door is as luxurious.

So that is what The Byre currently is; a beautiful and warm home with four bedrooms, two reception rooms, office, conservatory and a great kitchen. What could it be? We have worked with Callingham Architects, Coventry to create an idea of what The Byre could become. Planning permission would have to be sought.

We would make The Byre into a five bedroom home with open plan kitchen, large sitting room and dining room. We would add a beautiful porch and move the garaging to the front of the home. The large garage would be transformed into a swimming pool and lesiure area. We would landscape the existing driveway to make a beautiful centre garden where all rooms look out to. Space would be created by adding a floor above the master-bedroom and the existing office to house two large bedrooms. An office would replace one of the bedrooms next to the kitchen. The stable would be converted to a dressing room and en-suite bathroom for the master bedroom. The last change would be to remove the conservatory and add a timber framed orangery off the sitting room.

We think it would be sympathetic to the original building and the environment whilst creating a large and modern home.

Summary

  • Our favourite spot — The garden is beautiful. The children will love exploring.:
  • Top room — The sitting room is gorgeous when the fire is on and the family are over.:
  • Wow factor — The setting is idyllic. This is no ordinary cowshed.:
  • Our favourite part Mrs Clarke loves the kitchen with Aga. Mr Clarke would never leave the study, although he wouldn’t be working, he would be looking out the window.

Location

Local life around Meriden and Millisons Wood

Cows & Bluebells

They provide milk for our tea, meat for our Sunday roast and epitomise the English countryside. Meriden seems to be almost cow themed - the Bulls Head is even the name of the village pub

Apart from cattle, Meriden is a wonderful village. The pub is fabulous and you will always be greeted with a warm welcome, a roaring fire and fine food and drink. Meriden, claims to be the official centre of England means you are within reach of everywhere, particularly Birmingham, Solihull, Knowle & Balsall Common. You are also only 10 km from Birmingham Airport where you can be whizzed off to warmer climes.

The village has everything you want from a village; sports clubs, country walks, a friendly pub, fish and chip shop and a thriving and friendly community. Berryfields Farm Shop is a personal favourite place.

"We love a cow here at Mr & Mrs Clarke. Cattle are our favourite of all the farm yard animals."

Millisons Wood is a beautiful nature reserve, perfect for family walks or a weekend run. During late April/early May the whole of the area is carpeted with a sea of bluebells. The sight and smell is spectacular. Millisons Wood is a managed area of ancient woodland, with a multitude of plants and abundant birdlife, with plenty of excellent information boards beside the paths to keep you informed. There are areas of deep shade, open glades and coppiced areas, each one supporting varying flora and fauna.

There are some cracking primary and secondary schools in the area. You are connected via plane, train and automobile and can be travelling across the country and the world from your doorstep.

This area offers cows, bluebells and much, much more.
